U.S., Canada to jointly map disputed Beaufort seabed

The United States and Canada are embarking on a joint mission to map the resource-rich bed of the Beaufort Sea claimed by both countries.

Two research vessels from each of the nations have been working together for the past three years to map the larger Arctic seabed, but they have ignored the pie-shaped, 21,000-square-kilometer area the size of Lake Ontario.

Fla. authorities want lionfish dead

Florida authorities are asking divers to capture and kill lionfish, a spiny and dangerous invasive species that is gobbling up native species including snappers and groupers, and posing a threat to coral reefs.

The white and reddish brown-striped fish has a mane of venomous spines that can cause severe pain, swelling, nausea, headaches and convulsions. They have been expanding in the Caribbean and the Atlantic where there are no lionfish predators.

Judge asks for review of retardant use in wildfires

A federal judge ruled that the Forest Service should limit its use of fire retardants to fight wildfires since it can damage threatened and endangered species of fish and wildlife.

The retardants are the primary tool for fire control especially in the rugged West, where Forest Service helicopters drop clouds of retardant on burning land. Sometimes the chemicals may miss their mark and end up in lakes and streams, killing wildlife and fish.
